New to Truth or Dare?

The whole game fits on one card. Here it is, with three things worth knowing before your first round.

HOW TO PLAY

  1. Say truth or dare before the card is dealt. No switching after.
  2. Answer honestly, or do the dare properly.
  3. Three free skips each game. After that, the group picks a forfeit.
  4. Pass the turn. The game keeps track of whose go it is.
The full rules: how to play truth or dare

An old game, made easy

Truth or Dare grew out of a parlour game called Questions and Commands, described in print in 1712. This version needs no cards and no setup. The game deals hand-written cards, one tap at a time.

Which deck first?

Start one deck milder than you think the room wants. It's easy to turn the heat up and awkward to turn it down. Party suits people who have just met, Friends suits people with history, and Couples is written for two.

What makes a good card

A good truth is specific, so it gets a story and not a shrug. A good dare takes under a minute and can be done where you are. You can read every question before you play.

What is the Truth or Dare party game?

Truth or Dare, or truth and dare as many people call it, is a party game played in turns. On your turn you choose: answer a personal question honestly, or do a short challenge. Most of the fun is in that choice, and in watching your friends make it.

This version needs no cards, props or setup, only a phone. You don’t have to think up questions either: the game deals hand-written cards, one tap at a time, and remembers what your group has already seen.

Can you play multiplayer Truth or Dare online?

Yes. In the same room, pass one phone round. When your friends are in different places, open an online room and send them the link. Up to four players join from their own phones and see each card at the same moment.

Nobody who joins needs an account or an app. Many groups keep a video call open alongside on FaceTime, WhatsApp or Discord, and the host’s Playing apart switch deals only the cards that work on a call.

How do you play truth or dare online with friends?

Tap Start playing, choose Online room, pick a deck and create the room. Share the link or the six-character code. Turns go round on their own, and the game shows whose go it is on every phone.

Two players is the most common table. Couples and Spicy work best for two, Party and Friends for three or four.

Can you play truth or dare with strangers?

Not yet. Rooms are private: you play with the people you send the link to. Matching with a stranger is planned, with clean decks only and a way for either player to end the game at any time.

Playing

Is this truth or dare game free?
Yes. Every deck and every way to play is free, with no card behind a paywall. Video and voice calls in rooms are coming soon with Premium, which will also take the ads away.
Do I need to download an app or create an account?
No. It runs in the browser on any phone, tablet or laptop, so there is nothing to download. Only the person who opens an online room needs a free account. Friends who join need nothing.
Can I skip a card I don't want to do?
Yes. Each player gets three free skips a game, and a skip deals a new card of the same kind. In drinking mode a skip costs the sips printed on the card instead.
How is this different from a spin-the-wheel game?
There is no wheel to wait for. One tap deals a hand-written card, so turns move quickly and nobody has to think up the next question.
Can we play in Hindi, Turkish, Spanish or our own language?
Yes. Pick your language when you join a room or set up a game on one phone, and every card shows a live translation under the English one. There are 183 languages, and each player picks their own.

Online rooms

How do I play truth or dare online with friends?
Open a room, pick a deck and send the link. Up to four players join from their own phones and see each card at the same moment, wherever they are. Nobody who joins needs an account.
Can we see each other while we play?
Not inside the room yet: video and voice calls are coming soon. For now, most players keep a video or voice call open beside the game, and the host’s Playing apart switch deals only cards that work on a call.

Decks and age

Are there clean decks for younger groups?
Yes. Party, Friends and Couples are written for players aged 13 and over, and Party suits a mixed group best. Spicy and Extreme are 18+, and they are labelled wherever you pick a deck.
What is the difference between the Spicy and Extreme decks?
Spicy is flirty and personal, for close friends and couples. Extreme is the explicit deck, written for two partners, at home or on a call. Both are 18+, and the questions for adults page prints Spicy in full.

Drinking game

Can I play this as a drinking game?
Yes. Switch on drinking mode before you start, and skipping a card costs the sips printed on it. It is off by default and only for players of legal drinking age. Every card with a forfeit is on the truth or drink page.
